What on Earth is MTD?

You may have seen the acronym ‘MTD’ appearing in your newsfeed or inbox, and like many others, you may have filed it in the ‘I’ll worry about that another day’ or ‘I don’t think this affects me’ folder. Or maybe you’re aware of the many, many delays in its implementation, so you’re assuming the latest launch date will be postponed.

Well, we can confirm that Making Tax Digital (MTD) will become a legal accounting requirement for sole traders and landlords from April 2026, but don’t panic… In true Ellacott Morris style, we’re here to support you through the transition, with easy to access, plain English (no jargon guaranteed), practical seminars and webinars.

You can rely on us to make MTD painless and straightforward via our easy to understand, expert-led series of in-person and online events, designed specifically for sole traders and landlords just like YOU!

What is MTD?

Making Tax Digital is as the name suggests, about making your tax records, submissions and payments – digital.

Its implementation aims to simplify and reduce errors by using compatible software and quarterly updates to create a more ‘real-time’ picture of your tax position.

Who does it affect?

MTD currently only applies to VAT registered businesses, but from April 2026, if you are a sole trader or landlord with a gross income that exceeds £50,000/annum, it will apply to your income tax too.

What do I need to do next?

If you fall into the category above, then it’s time to get to grips with MTD. Our programme of FREE in-person seminars and online webinars will give you the practical knowledge and tools to ensure that MTD is a positive change for you and your business.

When, where, who and how…

These events are open to non-Ellacott Morris clients as well as those we’re already working with, so make the most of these free of charge opportunities to learn, grow and connect!
